This piece is a commentary on the fragility of our planet’s ecosystems and the life span of an endangered plant. I focused on the plant species Lindera melissifolia, or, pondberry. Pondberry is endangered in the SE United States, and is believed to be completely eradicated from Florida. Mainly driven out by the destruction of wetlands, the invasive species Coral Ardisia (that looks almost exactly the same as pondberry) also had an impact in speeding up the extinction process. By preserving the plants in gelatin I wanted to not only somehow freeze the ardisia from spreading, but also preserve and display the beauty of the pondberry. The whole thing is incredibly fragile and interconnected, just like our environment’s ecosystems.
